Did you know that the ocean absorbs 1/3 of human-made CO2, and provides 70% of our oxygen? This has played a huge role in mitigating the effects of global warming. However, the warmer a liquid gets, the less gas it can hold. Thus, as the ocean absorbs more and more CO2, it becomes more acidic, and less effective at absorbing it. We are essentially choking our oceans with CO2.
Just like our lungs absorb oxygen and release CO2, seaweed helps the ocean breathe by absorbing CO2 and releasing oxygen. In fact, seaweed absorbs more CO2 than all other marine plants combined, which is why we call it the ‘lungs of the sea.’
